Stepping on Beauty

We’ve all heard the quote, or variations of it.

“Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground” ~Theodore Roosevelt

“Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the starts” ~ Casey Kasem

“Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step; only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find his right road.” ~ Dag Hammarskjold

The idea is solid, keep looking forward. Strive for great things. Dream big.

All fantastic approaches to life and creativity. But not a great LITERAL approach.

Look down, see what you find.

What you find underfoot may amaze you. Beauty, often invisible to us on the day to day, because we simply can’t be bothered to look down. Textures and patterns, entire worlds of curious wonder we traverse each and every day.

I was reminded of this earlier this fall as I was out exploring the autumn forests. It was early in the transition from late summer to early autumn and things were still fairly green. The smallest hints of color only starting to peek through.

As I stood taking in the fresh autumn air, I looked down. I looked back where I had just walked, the trail not yet worn bare of the summer foliage. Looking forward a rich tapestry lay beneath my feet.  I had been stepping on beauty like a bull in a china shop. I was so focused on what was in front and around me I hadn’t taken time to simply look down where I was walking.

It seems I get this reminder every year around this time. One of these years I’ll learn. I’ll remember to look down as I’m stepping on beauty. I won’t need the annual reminder to visually explore the delicate intricacies of the forest floor.
